The best hire I’ve ever made went on to run a bigger company than mine. That’s not a warning. That’s the goal.
The trap most CEOs fall into
CEOs hire for comfort. They bring on people who are 80% of their capability because those people are easier to manage, easier to impress, and easier to replace. The result is a leadership team that’s a weaker version of the CEO.
What great CEOs do
They hire in their blind spots. If the CEO is a Visionary, they hire a ruthless Operator. If the CEO is an Operator, they hire a Prophet. The team becomes stronger than any individual — including the CEO.
How to know you got it right
Your best hires make you uncomfortable. They challenge your thinking. They bring decisions to you you wouldn’t have made. They occasionally disagree with you in public. If your leadership team always agrees with you, you didn’t build a team. You built an echo.
The hard part
The people who will outgrow you will also, someday, leave you. That’s not failure. That’s the system working. The best operators I’ve ever worked with are now running bigger things. Every one of them made my companies more valuable while they were there.
